Below is a chart of the water bath temperature with a measurement taken every 15 seconds using an external 0.1 C resolution thermometer over a one hour time frame. The Sous Vide At Home temperature controller was set to 60 C. The controller was connected to a 15 cup (6 Liter) rice cooker with the lid on.

The temperature within the bath fluctuates between 59.7C and 61.1 C, however a vast majority of the time the temperature is within 1 C of the required 60 C.It is also important to note that the temperature only drops below 60 C for very short periods of time.

This level of temperature control is absolutely sufficient for all home sous vide cooking tasks. Please refer to Douglas Baldwin's "A Practical Guide To Sous Vide Cooking"
for a discussion on this issue.

The rice cooker was only swithched on by the Sous Vide At Home controller for a total of 5 minutes during the one hour test. The significant reduction in cost both for the purchase of the unit and it reduced electricity usage compared to a water circulators or commercial water baths that run 100% of the time makes the Sous Vide At Home temperature controller the perfect choice for all users.

    International Buyers

    • The Sous Vide At Home temperature controller works almost anywhere in the world. It runs on both 110 Volts and 220 Volts.
    • There are two power plugs on the unit.
    • The power into the unit is supplied through a standard IEC power cord. This is the cord that comes will all computers. If you are an international buyer (ie non Aust/NZ) we will not send the cord to you. You will need to go to your local computer store and buy a standard computer cable. They are very cheap, in Australia they cost AU$5.
    • The power coming out of the unit and going to the water bath comes out via a standard Australian power plug. We have two adaptors available for our clients. If your country exists on the list below then we are able to supply you with an adaptor.

If your particular country does not appear on the description above then the adaptor we supply with the Sous Vide At Home temperature controller will not work in your country.

In this instance if you wish to use the Sous Vide At Home temperature controller you will need to source a suitable adaptor.

Most suitable appliances for a water bath

The recommended water bath units for the Sous Vide At Home controller are large rice cookers in the range of 15 to 30 cups of dry rice with limited insulation around the sides.

Critically the rice cooker or slow cooker must be the ON/OFF type of cooker with no other electronic switching in place. These are by far teh most common. The Sous Vide At Home temperature controller will not be able to control electronic rice cookers or slow cookers.

A good indicator that the cooker will not work is the nature of the display. If there is an LCD display or the 'ON' switch is not a large mechanical unit but rather a small touch membrane switch, the controller will not be able to control it.

Slow cookers are also suitable for this unit however their heating elemens are not as powerful as rice cookers, they tend to heat up more slowly. Slow cookers also suffer due to the reduced convection in the water bath owing to the heating elements being placed around the sides of the pot and not the bottom.

If using a slow cooker it is advisable to place warm water in the slow cooker at the start to save time in heating the water from cold. It is also important to keep the lid on a slow cooker to ensure maximum heating efficiency.
